Als Grau wird ein Farbreiz bezeichnet, der dunkler als Weiß und heller als Schwarz ist, aber keinen farbigen Eindruck (Farbvalenz) erzeugt. Grau besitzt keine Buntheit, es ist eine unbunte Farbe.
Alle Abstufungen zwischen reinem Weiß und reinem Schwarz (Schwarz-Weiß-Skala) werden als Graustufen bezeichnet. Mit den Bezeichnungen neutrale Grautöne, Neutralgrau, Reingrau wird betont, dass kein Farbstich vorliegt.
